You Become What You Think About

“A great manager has the ability to make a player think that he is better than he is. He convinces you to have confidence in yourself. He lets you know that he believes in you, and before long you discover talent that you never knew you had.” Reggie Jackson, 14-Time MLB All-Star, 5-Time World Series Champion

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in life is that you become what you think about most. You tend to live up to—or down to—the expectations you have for yourself.

It doesn’t happen overnight and it’s not an exact science, but I’ve found that over the long run we all pretty much become the people we expect to become.

A parent, coach, teacher, or mentor can play a major role in determining the way we see ourselves. Depending on the type of mentor we listened to, this can be positive or negative.

The reality is, we’re surrounded by people and messages that often encourage us to see ourselves and the world around us in a more negative light.

That’s why it’s so important to take an active role in building up your own self-image.

You’ve got to take control of the expectations you set for yourself, the words you speak to yourself, and the way you see yourself.

This is what my new book, THE MENTAL GAME, is all about. It’s about taking control of your thoughts and learning to think like a winner, no matter what is going on around you.

Once you take control of the way you think, you’ll be amazed at the results you start experiencing.
